Breast Cancer Recovery Pilates
Newbury, Berkshire & Online
Supporting women before surgery and throughout recovery with personalised Pilates in Newbury, Berkshire and online.
A breast cancer diagnosis and treatment can bring significant physical and emotional challenges. Chemotherapy, surgery, radiotherapy, hormone therapy and medically induced menopause can all affect how your body feels and functions.
As a qualified Pink Ribbon Pilates Instructor, trained through M.Bodies, I offer personalised Pilates sessions designed to support women before surgery and throughout recovery. Sessions are tailored to your individual needs, helping you move with greater confidence, restore strength and mobility, and return to exercise safely at your own pace
Specialist Breast Cancer Exercise Training
I have completed specialist breast cancer exercise training through the Pink Ribbon Pilates programme developed by M.Bodies Training.
This training has given me the knowledge and expertise to safely adapt Pilates for women recovering from breast cancer, taking into account the physical changes that can occur following treatment, surgery and ongoing therapies.
This includes experience working with clients following:
Lumpectomy
Single or bilateral mastectomy
Flat closure surgery
Implant based reconstruction
Autologous tissue reconstruction, including TRAM, DIEP and latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction
Sentinel lymph node biopsy / Axillary lymph node clearance
Radiotherapy and chemotherapy
Hormone therapy and medically induced menopause
I understand that different treatments and surgical procedures can affect movement, posture, strength, mobility and confidence in different ways. Every recovery is unique, which is why each Pilates programme is individually tailored to your surgery, treatment history, current symptoms and personal goals, helping you return to movement safely and confidently.
How Pilates Can Help After Breast Cancer Treatment
Pilates can play an important role in helping women regain confidence in their bodies and return to movement following breast cancer treatment.
Potential benefits include:
Improving shoulder and upper body mobility
Restoring range of movement following surgery
Improving posture and body awareness
Rebuilding strength and stamina
Reducing stiffness and improving ease of movement
Supporting balance and coordination
Improving core strength and functional movement
Supporting bone health through safe, weight-bearing and strengthening exercise
Helping you return to exercise safely and confidently
Supporting overall wellbeing and quality of life
Rebuilding Strength Safely
Following treatment, many women experience reduced strength, muscle loss, fatigue and a loss of confidence in their physical abilities.
Pilates provides a gradual and structured approach to rebuilding:
Core strength
Upper & Lower body strength
Postural endurance
Functional fitness for everyday activities
Exercises are adapted to your current ability level and progressed at a pace that feels right for you.
Medical Menopause, Bone Health and Long Term Wellbeing
Breast cancer treatment can sometimes trigger an early or medically induced menopause. This may increase the risk of bone loss, osteoporosis, reduced muscle mass and changes in balance and strength.
Pilates can help support long term health through weight-bearing exercise, strength training, balance work and functional movement, helping women maintain independence, confidence and resilience as they recover and move forward after treatment.
Managing Fatigue and Returning to Exercise
Cancer-related fatigue can be one of the most challenging aspects of recovery.
Pilates offers a gentle and adaptable form of exercise that can help women gradually return to movement without feeling overwhelmed.
Sessions can be modified to accommodate:
Fatigue & Reduced fitness levels
Ongoing treatment side effects
Joint stiffness
Reduced confidence in movement
The aim is to help you reconnect with your body and build confidence in movement again.
When Can I Start Pilates?
If you are already attending Pilates before surgery, it may be possible to continue working together throughout your treatment and recovery, where appropriate and with guidance from your healthcare team.
For women who are new to Pilates, I recommend waiting until you have been assessed and cleared by your NHS breast care team or physiotherapist following surgery before starting sessions. This helps ensure that exercise is introduced safely and at the right stage of your recovery.
If you are unsure whether Pilates is appropriate for you at this stage, please get in touch and I will be happy to discuss your individual circumstances.
What to Expect
Your first session will include a detailed assessment and discussion about:
Your treatment history
Current symptoms and concerns
Mobility posture & movement patterns
Exercise experience
Personal goals
Together we will create an individualised programme designed around your needs, helping you feel stronger, more confident and supported in your recovery.
